May 2016 - Harriet Mackenzie & Morgan Szymanski

Harriet Mackenzie - violin and Morgan Szymanski - guitar

In May, Shipston Music Society were delighted to welcome back the virtuoso violinist, Harriet Mackenzie.  She was accompanied by Morgan Szymanski, an outstanding guitar player tipped as “a player destined for future glories” according to Classical Guitar Magazine.  They are both currently playing at an international level and we were fortunate indeed that they were able to find time in their busy lives to come to Warwickshire.

Harriet and Morgan often play together and their rapport was evident throughout the programme. This included music by composers, Vivaldi and Bach, Paganini and De Falla.  Alongside were pieces by perhaps less well known composers such as Ponce, Agustin Barios and Sarasate, (though, for this member anyway, it is a pleasure to hear music not heard before!).    But an evening such as this could not possibly be complete without the wonderful music of Argentine composer, Astor Piazzolla, and we were not disappointed.  Not only were we given the three pieces that make up the History of the Tango, - Bordello, Cafe and Nightclub -  but following the audience’s enthusiastic reception, we were given an encore of perhaps his most well known piece, the Libertango.

Harriet and Morgan’s performances – and they performed solo as well as together – were of the highest standard and it was a pleasure to have them play for us.
